A recent video of local Germans chasing a Google Street View car taking pictures of their neighborhood was almost like something out of an old monster movie, all they need were the pitchforks and torches.
Has Google become the new cultural imperialist forcing American ideals throughout the world? Seems the attacks on Google from Europe and Asia right now almost echo those against Walt Disney during the last century.
Last year the Germans had kicked back about saving IP addresses - making the act illegal. Now the villagers are revolting against the invasion of their privacy by the photo teams from Google.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to chat with Ask.com U.S. President Doug Leeds about the new "Question of the Day" feature that debuted this week. Leeds championed the new feature internally at Ask.com and is quite passionate about how it reflects the brand's larger search strategy.
Leeds informed me that the Question of the Day feature first launched in the U.K. It did so well there, that they're trying it out stateside.
"Before search, asking questions is the way we got that information," said Leeds. "We changed our behavior. You couldn't just ask a search engine a question."
Ask.com receives queries in the form of a question as a percentage more than any other search engine. Ask.com has been capitalizing on that fact in the last year, sharpening their focus on Q&A.
Last June, Ask.com announced that they had built a database containing 300 million Q&A pairs indexed from various answers sites on the web. By November, that database grew to 400 million and Ask.com launched a new section of their site focusing solely on Q&A.
Featuring a Question of the Day on the Ask.com homepage is just the next step in executing a strategy focused around answers. In some respects, this reflects search behavior that has come full circle.
But as the ten blue links have led to much research, spam and confusion, search engines are increasingly returning to what people really want: Answers. Quick answers.
So does this mean Ask.com is getting out of the general search game and focusing on a niche in search? Leeds sees it the other way around.
"I strongly believe that search is a niche within questions and answers," emphasized Leeds.
Ask found that prompting homepage visitors with a Question of the Day increased the number of queries written as a question. This was even higher for those who clicked on the Question of the Day.
Searchers who received good answers, which is likely considering the aforementioned database, increased the frequency and attention paid to Ask.com.
"What I'm committed to is getting people an answer to their question," concluded Leeds.
That commitment reflects a maturing Ask.com, coming into their own by returning to their roots.

Team Manning and Team Brees, eat your hearts out. It's Team Romo that won the search bowl - at least on Bing.
That's right, the Dallas Cowboys were the most searched NFL team on Bing this season. They beat out both teams that will play in the Superbowl this coming Sunday - the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints. If you're wondering why I keep writing Colts before Saints (I know you're not but humor me) - it's because this Sunday I'm a Colts fan. (Hey, the Panthers and the Giants didn't make it, ok?)
But I'll throw you a bone, Saints fans - New Orleans was the 5th most searched NFL team on Bing. The Colts came in a paltry 15th place. Ouch!
By the way, if you want to keep up with the Big Game's stats and scores this Sunday, Bing's Instant Answers will be fired up and ready to keep you informed. Type the key terms 'Super Bowl XLIV' or 'Super Bowl 2010' directly into the Bing search box.
In the meantime, query those terms and get links to pre-game analysis as well as recipes for your Superbowl party.

And be sure to head to Bing/Twitter to catch real-time reaction from the Twittersphere about the game and, of course, those all-important Superbowl ads.

Sohu reported its Q4 2009 earnings this morning and the news is good for the Chinese Internet portal. (Sohu is basically China's Yahoo!) Revenues came in at $135.8 million and were up 12% compared to Q4 2008.
Specifically, brand advertising revenues were up 2%, coming in at $45.9 million. While Sohu tried to paint the picture as being on target with their guidance, Wall Street wasn't thrilled with the numbers. Stocks were down 0.7% at the time of this post. Perhaps their disappointment is due to the fact that Sohu previously has posted huge numbers, including a 600% jump in profit back in the summer of 2008.
Wall Street also may be skittish on Chinese Internet companies as Google's recent ultimatum has raised serious questions on censorship and Internet security issues as it relates to the Chinese government.
Still, Sohu is hoping for great things in 2010. With the Winter Olympics and the World Cup both being held this year, they're hoping for big ad numbers to come in. After all, that aforementioned 600% came the summer of the 2008 Olympics.

It must be partnership announcement day in the search industry. Earlier this morning Jonathan Allen reported on the new deal between Distilled and SEOMoz. Now, we're getting word of a new partnership between Webtrends and Acronym Media. The two have paired up to provide software solutions to aid search marketers in managing and executing their efforts.
"The need for marketers to easily optimize their content from a single platform while integrating with partners like Acronym Media will be a significant priority in the near future. Acronym Media understands the importance of bringing this philosophy together through search marketing and web measurement," said James McDermott, vice president partnerships, Webtrends.
One of the new tools is EKOS (Enterprise Keyword Optimization System), a dashboard reporting platform designed to provide an integration of web analytics data, including conversion funnels, bounce rates and visitor profiles. EKOS is compatible with Ad Director and Webtrends Analytics 9.
"The need for measurable results and revenue-generating strategies has never been as great as it is now, and a tool like EKOS, combined with powerful Webtrends analytics, is uniquely positioned to deliver the customer and campaign intelligence required for world-class marketing," said Anton E. Konikoff, Founder & CEO of Acronym Media.
Acronym Media and Webtrends also have competitive intelligence solutions planned, including Deep Dive Competitor Analysis and Competitive Intelligence Monitoring.

Online job searching can be a daunting task. Keyword queries often return irrelevant results in with desired listings. On the recruiting side, sifting through hundreds or even thousands of candidates is not practical.
But Monster.com is working hard to make job search easier. They've been introducing some new innovations for job search - both on the job seeker side and on the recruiter side. Monster is using patented search technology they've dubbed 6Sense to fuel these new job search technologies.
When you visit Monster.com as a job seeker, notice that you now have two options for search. Standard search, Monster's traditional model, and PowerSearch, the new patented technology which is currently in BETA.
As you can see, in the Standard search, you've got one box for your keywords and another for location. With PowerSearch, you get to a box for searching job titles, another for skills, and one for location.
I tested out the search using terms and skills I used to help my husband search for a job two years ago. He's a software developer specializing in Autocad in Raleigh, NC. Power Search returned zero results - but that's a good thing. Because searching on other job sites - I couldn't find a job that meets that specific skill - but I had to scan hundreds of job listings to learn that. That's because traditional job search will pull up any job mentioning Autocad - including drafting positions.
I wanted to make sure, though that when a search is conducted on Power Search, the results are actually good. Not an easy task in this economy. So, I searched for my husband's new skill - iPhone development - and pretended we were looking for a job for him in New York. There was a nice list of 12 jobs to sift through.
I compared that to HotJobs, which not only made me sign into my Yahoo! account (annoying!), but returned listings for IT jobs, which weren't relevant.
"The 6Sense semantic search technology is an extension of our investment in many technology innovations we've delivered over the past two years," said Darko Dejanovic, executive vice president, Global CIO and head of product for Monster. "We've continued to invest significantly in technology, product and infrastructure to completely revamp the talent and job search experience."
For recruiters, the new Power Resume Search offers an insanely robust search that filters searches from having to scour thousands to sifting through a short list of truly qualified candidtes.
"I hear from our customers that their businesses have jobs that they desperately need to fill and yet don't have the resources to make that a reality. 6Sense technology changes all of this, facilitating the hiring process so that better matches are made more efficiently thereby getting people back to work more quickly," said Sal Iannuzzi, chairman, president, and chief executive officer, Monster.
Last fall, Monster briefed me on the Power Resume Search technology and I must admit, it's very awesome. Recruiters can filter by location, skill, years of experience and many other factors. They can also decide which factors are most important.
Monster is really on to some great tech here. It's the kind of tech that needs to expand to other search verticals and search in general.
"This is an early example of what the online experience will look like in the coming decade, as we move from search as a separate tool to integrated online environments that guide us through an information task. Monster is a very early example in this search revolution," said Susan Feldman, Research Vice President for Search and Discovery Technologies, IDC.
Even if you're not looking for a job right now, go check out their new Power Search. It's what search can be and it's what search is right now for Monster.com.

Over at Ask.com today, there's a "Question of the Day" box over the main search box. Apparently, today's question is "How many women have received the Medal of Honor?" We haven't seen this on Ask.com before, though we have seen hints of it with specific ad campaigns, such as the one for the Night at the Museum sequel last spring.
Click on the question and it takes you to a page, where the answer appears at the top and then organic results and other Ask features such as related searches appear as well:
My initial reaction:
- Ask is harnessing the power of questions. They get more queries as questions (as a percentage) than any other search engine.
- Builds on new Q&A feature launched last year. Maximizes Q&A database they've been building over time.
- Today's question is targeted at women. Ask ran a successful breast cancer awareness campaign last fall and gained female searchers as a result.
- Reminiscent of "word of the day" for Dictionary.com, which Ask acquired in 2008.
- Better than Bing's HotSpots - which are only visible when you mouseover specific areas. Plus, this question engages site visitors in specific actions.
Those are just my speculations. We'll report more as details become available. In the meantime, what's your reaction to the new Ask.com homepage? Leave a comment below to let us know.

Yield Software has launched a new FREE product called SEO Analyzer. To use the tool, simply go directly to YieldSoftware.com and look for SEO Analyzer. Type in the URL you wish to analyze and your email, then click Submit.
First impression? SEO Analyzer tool works fast. Many free tools are slow and you can practically write a thesis while it loads. But this one is super-fast.
SEO Analyzer is also easy to understand. Do you remember getting started in SEO and you had to learn all about HTML tags, links (inbound/outbound/internal etc), domain age, etc? SEO Analyzer is clear as day. A clear day. Sunny skies. No clouds.

Some of the recommendations are subject to debate. Long discussions and arguments have taken place in the SEO community over things like using hyphens to separate words in URLs. If you're new to SEO, welcome to the confusing world of best practices.
SEO Analyzer also serves up suggestions that are good for usability, even though they don't directly involve rankings, per se. For example, meta descriptions, at least in Google's case, do not directly affect rankings. But they are included in the search results and could persuade a searcher to click on a link.
While SEO Analyzer is a helpful product, Yield Software offers a more robust solution if you want to get really in-depth with your SEO. The solution is called Natural Search Optimizer. It's part of Yield's premium search marketing suite, but Yield is now offering Natural Search Optimizer as its own stand-alone product. Pricing starts at $49 per month per domain.
"Yield Software's new stand-alone version of our Natural Search Optimizer works daily to track and tune web pages to drive more qualified traffic to company websites, products and services," said Matt Malden, founder and CEO of Yield Software.
With the new offering comes new features. Upgrades include inbound link tracking, traffic monitoring and page rank trend analysis for keywords across the Google, Yahoo, and Bing. The upgrades are included in both the stand-alone version and for the module included with the Yield Software suite.

Last year, I posted an item to the Search Engine Watch blog entitled, "It's 'Horses for Courses' at SES London 2009." I said business professionals may want to bring a team to Search Engine Strategies London - because there will be three concurrent conference tracks and no business professional will be able to attend all of the sessions.
But, upon reflection, I should have said it's "courses for horses," because each of the three tracks of the leading search marketing conference in Europe is designed for a different member of your team.
There are tracks for those going to Search Engine Strategies for the first time. And there are other tracks for those going to SES London for the Nth time. There are even tracks for those in the public relations industry who should go to Search Engine Strategies to learn about social media, real-time SEO, Twitter and YouTube.
In other words, there are different courses for different horses in your company's stable.
And, yes, SES still offers special group discounts. In you want more information, check the rates and registation details.
You might also want to come early and stay late. There's Online Marketing Summit Day at SES London on Monday, 15 February. And there's SES Search Engine Marketing (SEM/SEO) Training of Friday, 19 February.
In between, there's an number of special events, including an SES London Meet and Greet, theatre presentations, sponsored sessions, "Black Hat/White Hat Unconferenced," and an SES London 2010 LondonSEO Party.
By the way, I'm not touting the event because the UK economy has just exited recession and you need to get ready for the recovery. No, you need to attend Search Engine Strategies in good times as well, because you need to keep up-to-date on trends and issues.
Oh, and I'm not touting the event because it needs more attendees. Christian Georgeou, Marketing Manager at Incisive Media, says, "I'm happy to report that currently registration is up over last year more than 10% for SES London now less than a month out form the show."
No, I'm urging you to get your horses on those courses because Google had a strong fourth quarter, with 17% year over year revenue growth. Given that the global economy is still in the early days of recovery, this was an extraordinary end to the year. And according to Business Week, Apple reportedly is in talks with Microsoft to make Bing the default search engine on the iPhone's Safari Web browser.
So, don't expect the pace of change in the search industry to slow down anytime soon. If fact, it's much more likely to speed up.
Ensuring that SES London 2010 reflects the latest changes is no small task. At SES Chicago 2009, I interviewed Mike Grehan, the VP and Global Content Director for Search Engine Watch, ClickZ, and Search Engine Strategies.
Grehan reflected on past SES shows, the evolution of SES, and the upcoming conferences in 2010, including SES London. He discussed the advent of real-time search and warned search marketers to be aware that the industry is constantly changing and evolving. He discussed the power panels and state of the industry panels that are being brought back for London.
SES London and New York 2010 preview with Mike Grehan, VP, Global Content Director, Incisive
I should disclose that Search Engine Strategies is a client of my agency. But trust me on the pace of change.

Distilled, a U.K. based SEO and digital marketing firm, has struck a partnership with SEOmoz in which Distilled will take over the SEO consulting practice. Striking up a formal partnership with SEOmoz, worth an anticipated $1m in the first year, Distilled will be joining SEOmoz in Seattle in its first US based office. Distilled claimed the new office will enable it to expand its client base and operate the custom SEO consulting practice formerly run by SEOmoz, whilst SEOmoz said it can now focus all its energy on developing tools and resources for the search engine optimization community.
This partnership is an extension of collaboration between the two companies since 2007 and whilst many of the day to day operations of SEOmoz website remain unchanged, it is a move that both companies are extremely excited by. Will Critchlow of Distilled says the "the US is a big opportunity for us" and he expects to double their UK business over the next two years.
"Distilled's partnership with SEOmoz has worked perfectly because of our shared vision of SEO in clients' boardrooms," comments Will Critchlow, Co-founder of Distilled. "The opportunity to take over their consulting business as their subscription platform takes off presents us with a fantastic opportunity to expand in the US and we look forward to rapid growth in 2010."
SEOmoz currently makes 85% of its revenue from the SaaS based SEO tools subscription products it offers. SEOmoz have been seeking second round funding from investors and this latest partnership could boost its valuation as a pure play SEO tools company.
"At SEOmoz, we like to have our cake and eat it, too. We're thrilled to have Distilled taking over our consulting business and growing its operations here in the US. The partnership with Distilled lets us focus on what we do best--build great SEO software and tools--while continuing to gain the experience and insight that comes from an experienced consulting team working across diverse projects," said Rand Fishkin, CEO and Co-founder of SEOmoz.
